‘조금만 더’의 주문이 생각의 차이를 만들어 냅니다.
“은사님은 항상 저에게 ‘조금만 더 해봐’라는 말씀을 하셨어요. ‘이 정도면 인정 받겠지’라고 안도하기도 전에 항상 더 노력할 것을 주문받았죠. 야속했던 적이 한 두 번이 아닙니다. 하지만, 이 말로 인해 제 연구 인생이 달라졌어요. 실패를 많이 경험한 터라 당장의 성과가 보이지 않는다고 해서 위축되지 않고, 접근방식이 달라지면 성공할 수 있지 않을까 하는 방법론적인 고민을 합니다. 이것이 제 연구철학이자 후학들에게 물려주고 싶은 연구자의 자세입니다.”
실험하는 연구자, 실천하는 교육자
모교인 인하대학교 강단에 서고 있는 양회창 교수는 앞서 설명한 “조금만 더 해보자”라는 연구자의 마음가짐을 후배들이자 후학들이 공감했으면 한다는 뜻을 전했다. 이것이야말로 그가 더 좋은 자리를 마다하고 모교를 선택하게 된 가장 큰 이유이기 때문이다. 말보다는 행동으로 꼭 실천해내겠다는 의지를 다지고 있는 양 교수는 실제로 사비를 들여 높은 수준의 연구실을 완성했으며, 학생들과 실험실에서 밤을 지새우며 직접 실험에 임하는 열의를 보이는 중이다. 기자는 그에게 ‘꿈’이라는 화두를 건넸다. 잠시 생각에 잠긴 그가 입가에 옅은 미소를 띠고 이렇게 말했다.
“저는 하나를 선택하면 좀처럼 바꿀 줄 모르는 성격입니다. 최근 많은 연구들이 과학계에서 이슈가 되는 곳으로 연구비를 따라 편중되고 있지만, 이 분야를 끝까지 지키고 싶어요. 한 우물을 파는 심경으로 유기 반도체 기반 소자를 연구하다보면 제 꿈만이 아닌, 인하대학교 학생들의 꿈의 지경을 넓힐 수 있을 것으로 기대합니다.”

“Phd Position”
Dear Sir,
I hope you will be in good health. I am Mr. Muhammad Rehan from Pakistan. I am working as Physics teacher in government sector in Pakistan. Respected Sir, In 2008, I did BSc (math A, math B, and Physics) from University of Education (UOE), Lahore, Pakistan. UOE is well-known university in Pakistan which is producing highly qualified and motivated professional to serve the nation. From the start, I have been fascinated by the novel phenomena occurring in different materials so this was my desire to start my professional carrier as a material scientist. In order to make this dream true, in 2010 I took admission in MSc Physics at Government College University (GCUF), Faisalabad, Pakistan because by knowing and applying the basic concepts of physics we can tailor the properties of our materials according to our desire. In MSc, along with other subjects my main focus remained on materials related subjects i.e. solid state physics etc. My training at GCUF especially in the field of material science enabled me look insight to material structure and helped me to understand what is happening inside at atomic level. During master course I learned theoretically concepts as well as also practical skills to carry out and design new experiments. After the successful completion of fellowship, I started my job as a physics teacher. In addition, I am doing M.Phil in advance nanomaterial and Technology in Department of Physics at the University of Agriculture, Faisalabad. Agriculture University is one of the top most ranked universities of Pakistan. Within small period (in one month) I have completed my M.Phil. So, I look forward to once again becoming a part of scientific community; a pursuit of career in research and experience of excitement and satisfaction of being interest in this field.
I have read your profile and research activities. With the educational values and experiences that I possess, I believe that I have the capability, and potential to take the PhD position. I am confident that I will be an active, open-minded and useful member and researcher, willing to contribute during my PhD.
